The MCG

$90.00

More than just a sporting stadium, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is a Melbourne sporting institution.

The ‘G, as it is affectionately known to locals, was established in 1853, and is steeped in a rich sporting history.  It has been the home of AFL football since 1859, was the birthplace of Test cricket in 1877, and was the main stadium for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

Journalist Greg Baum described it as "a shrine, a citadel, a landmark. It is to this city what the Opera House is to Sydney... it symbolises Melbourne to the world". The iconic light towers represented in this sketch are now an instantly recognisable landmark of Melbourne.

The MCG is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and was included on the Australian National Heritage List in 2005.
